# Would online care fit the visit I need?
Think about what the visit needs to cover. Then ask how each setting would handle it.
## Can this visit cover your health needs?
For the doctor or other health professional, permission to give care depends on your location during the visit. Your state’s requirements apply. This US guidance is dated 26 September 2026.
A first visit can sometimes be online without an earlier meeting in a room. It must meet your state’s rules and the level of care your health needs require.
The medical boards recommend against basing treatment only on a fixed form with preset answers. There must be room for further questions from the doctor to get enough health information.
Ask the service how it checks your state’s rules and whether it can meet your health needs online. Ask who reviews a form and how you can reply.

## Questions for an online visit
### The format
Is this live video, a phone conversation or messages read later?
Can I ask the person giving care questions and hear back?
### Arranging the next step
What happens if I need an examination?
Who arranges any tests close to home?
How are results shared with the people involved?
## Questions for a visit in a room
### The appointment
Can this visit address my main concern?
What records would help the conversation?
### The next conversation
Would later check-ins be here or online?
Who explains results if they arrive after the visit?
Who handles questions between visits?
## Keep the same expectation of care
The boards expect the same level of care whether you meet on a screen or in a room.
Ask how the service would move the plan to another setting if that became necessary.
