Inside the visit
# What happens during the appointment?
You do not need a treatment name ready. A useful opening is the thing you want help with.
## Start with your health concern
Choosing from an online treatment list cannot replace a review of your health, says the national group representing state medical boards. Its advice is dated 26 September 2026.
The group says the conversation must also leave room for questions from you. The doctor or health professional giving care must be available for those questions.
The rules doctors must follow are set by each state. The national group’s advice is guidance; it does not itself make state law.
Describe the concern first. Describe what you have already tried. Then say which change you would most like to see.
## What would be useful to bring?
A note about your main concern, in your own words.
The medicines and supplements you already take.
Any past results or records you want to discuss.
The parts of the offer you do not understand.
Ask how the service wants to receive records before sending them. Keep a copy of the questions you most want answered.
## Leave space for these questions
What do you think is going on, and what else could explain it?
What are the choices, including a choice without this medicine?
What would a test or an exam help you decide?
Who will read the results and talk them through with me?
### A test can mean another step
For visits by video, phone or messages, the medical boards advise doctors to make arrangements for needed tests. That may mean sending you elsewhere for them.
That advice also calls for a visit in person when looking into your health concern needs a physical exam.
Ask what that would mean for the timing, the location and the bill.
What would the plan be if, after talking, we decide this medicine does not fit?
